Should have seen the way things would go Something like a diagram of two Two completely different points of view X-ray memories of you Visions of the past that haunt us Shaking panes of smoking colored glass Cathedrals built to hold what we fear most X-ray memories of you Sure enough it’s plain to see What the time and years have done to me The time and pain and years have done to me X-ray memories of you When it’s time for me to go I’ll look into the stormy-colored sky See a picture of your inner eye X-ray memories of you
2.
Black holes burnin’ out in outer space Sittin’ there with pizza all over your face And everywhere between here and there Just a whole lotta dirty air I said Ain’t life grand Yeah, ain’t life grand Long tall Sally standin’ at the bar Thinks she’s gonna marry a rock and roll star He’s just standin’ there acting stupid She thinks she’s been bit by Cupid I said Ain’t love grand Yeah, ain’t life grand Woo-hoo, baby, I know what you like Love’s so grand I could hold it in my hand And when I do I feel so good I could kill myself Yeah, ain’t life grand
3.
Hear the sound coming from the ground You head is poundin’ Feel the grey waste away Waiting for the day Your head, your feet, your mind will turn to clay Your heart and soul encased in lead I’ve been down there before Walking through revolving doors Think I’ll just take a walk instead A walk inside my head There’s a bell at the door to hell It’s the one you think you’re ringin’ Up above there’s a corpse with wings That keeps on singin’ Songs that go right through your achin’ head As you lay there alone in your bed I’ve been down there before Standin’ at that stupid door Think I’ll just take a walk instead Yeah, a walk inside my head

Let's Fuck! 02:28
I ain’t hangin’ around for nothin’ at all I ain’t settin’ myself up for no fall I just come round at night and have a ball And that’s all It ain’t that I ain’t got nothin’ better to do It’s just that I might as well do it with you Ah, the things that otherwise I might not do And I do Now wouldn’t it be real nice to take a walk But maybe let’s just stay inside and talk But in the end you know You know what we’re gonna do Let’s fuck!
5.
Thousands of tiny flowers cover the earth See ‘em from my window layin’ in my bed The world looks like a ball I threw against the wall When I was small Out in the garden Seems like only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay You see me, say that I look blue I say that you look green At least from what I’ve seen Just like the garden Isn’t it funny how things change Yeah, they get so strange And then they change And isn’t funny how it goes And then it’s gone Tiny flowers, they cover my earth See ‘em from my window layin’ in my bed The world looks like a ball I threw against the wall When I was small Out in the garden
6.
Walkin’ down the street just the other day to get some air Creepy shadows lurkin’ there Life on the west side after dark is really crazy Formed of life filled with fear Walkin’ over to a friends house one night way back with some beer Saw someone in an alley staggerin’ Got a little closer and I saw what he was carryin’ Sawed-off shotgun makin’ noises in the air Hey, life in the city Sleepin’ fitfull’ on a blood-stained mattress deep in a hole Life in the city I love even though it’s shitty ‘Cause I love that feelin’ of adrenaline high When you think that you’re the next to die Oh, life in the city, I love it Life in the city
7.
Maxine 03:20
Maxine You got a way you go away You got an eye right by your head You got that light show for a bed And it’s so red Maxine You got a yellow in your eye I hear a voice up in my mind sayin’ Let’s go for a ride Into the sky Tell me, Maxine Where haven’t we been before Out by Uranus’ ring Oh, Maxine, can’t you see I’m burning Walkin’ past the moons of Mercury Our final orbit of decay I feel you floatin’ there right next to me I hear these words as you say You say 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 Blast off
8.
Fracture 02:59
At the end of the road I’m sure I’ll see you standing there A wreath of fire round your head And clouds laid out behind you just like hospital beds In the event of your detection Arrest and search and seizure We will not acknowledge The point of your departure Fracture
9.
Down 02:50
Two and two is eight And what’s more Eight and eight is four What you thought was true Stands up and walks right out on you Now you’re down, down, down Six and six is three Can’t you see Three and three is eighty-three The twinkle in your eye Now it’s time for it to die ‘Cause you’re down, down, down I’m soaking in what? (alternate lyric: golden starfish suck me) Four and Four is two So what’s new Two and two is eighty-two You tried to have some fun Then you fell into the sun You fell down, down, down Ha ha ha

Crunchy bug shells under foot Urban dwellings covered in soot Mystical voices out of nowhere The dried-out husks of large insects All these stupid bugs they keep at night It’s a goddamn insect blight Gonna get a can of Raid and show ’em I’ll mutilate ‘em so bad their momma won’t know ‘em You’re gonna take a dead one Stick it down your little sister’s shirt And you know she’s gonna scream a lot Even though it don’t hurt Cried the mystical voices out of nowhere The dried-out husks of large insects
11.
I can always think of what to say But I can never remember it Upside down and all around Oh baby, don’t dismember it When I say I don’t need a break We don’t have to fake it any more In the end you think it’s for the best To think that everything’s the way you want Well here it is the big decay And you can’t seem to hear the call When I say I don’t need a break We don’t have to fake it any more Listen to me We don’t have to fake it Listen to me Any more I say I don’t need a break You don’t have to fake it any more
12.
Saw a car burning by the road Plastic death smell met my nose I said, a hunk of metal smoking in the gutter Death of somebody’s automated mother It’s a thought provoking day A thought provoking day Little kid standing barefoot in the street Man, he’s chewing on a dried-out piece of meat Something like a Slim Jim, he thinks it tastes sweet At any rate it’s something to eat A thought provoking day It’s a thought provoking day What a thought provoking day I can see exactly what’s goin’ down Sure the weather’s much nicer Down in Costa Rica and Nicaragua Polar ice caps meltin’ Man, you know it’s a shame Caught out in a downpour of acid rain Passin’ by a drunken bum Man, he’s suckin’ on a roll of Tums Thinkin’ of Trotsky would he be better off Paving a Siberian parking lot Thought provoking day Such a thought provoking day Everything I see on the street makes me think It’s a thought provoking day
13.
Out by the back porch I can’t believe it It’s you Thousands of insects Dead on the lamplight Over you All I want to do Is shut the door on you Go to the bathroom Pick up some loose change What’s new Go to the bus stop Stand in the cold room Til I turn blue All I seem to do Is waste my time on you Go down the back stairs I see your black hair Then you Look in my dead eyes You close your red eyes Then you Say all I came to do Is say goodbye to you

Song 04:07
I will sing of a place where the buildings go right up to the curb There’s no place to walk there you just wave from the windows Every day’s a parade Ain’t no traffic lights there Recklessly autos collide up in the air The piles of metal are removed with great care And placed with their owners in individual shrines With picture glass windows for the curious passerby I will sing of the place with no windows Dates and times kept independent of the sun Blacklists abound there in the dark, dark, dark, dark dark Little eye that’s winkin’ at ya The folks there are small They like the smell of a carpeted hall And they love the little beep of their favorite watch They watch their step Sing a song of the world Where nothing is seen and nothing is told And the memory is confined to a screen print In the kitchen by the sink on the wall Recklessly autos collide up in the air The piles of metal are removed with great care And placed with their owners in individual shrines With picture glass windows for the curious passerby

Another Song 01:53
So now you’re in the Marines You’re lookin’ great so clean, polite and well-behaved You’ve been save from life on the back of a garbage truck So now what do you have to say to us It was a good idea after all Tell us it was Tell us it was And he says oh yeah You were right all along I can break anyone’s head I’m so fuckin’ strong People avoid my glance as I’m walking along But in his mind he’s still a confused little child He’s been tamed but they want more They want to crush him with shame No one could be expected to put up with for long And he says in his mind Can’t you see that I’m gone now My face has been erased And the pictures you want in there are in the right places And I can’t stand the pressure of this break-neck pace Yeah it’s been pushin’ too hard And something’s gotta give Yeah, you know it’s gotta give You’ve got to give So now they’re standing there looking at his black and blue neck Hearing the story of how they found him hanging in the barracks What was his plight he was a model G.I. Kind of a loner they say but he was always that way And they say where did he go wrong What was he missing When they know all along It was them that he was missing And that’s the end of another song
16.
You’re taking the high road I get the low road No matter what you say You go the other way You’re playing with my head You’re laying in my bed You’re laying around and you’re playing around Then you come back around What are you doing I like history Cause it’s a mystery You just lay in your room Up in some gloom You got a little plastic spider You’re so cool You’re playing me for a fool I’m up against the wall You’re taking me for a fall And what do I do I just sit around here saying What are you doing I’m laying in my room Looking at the smiling picture of you next to my bed I stare a burning hole right between the eyes But I still can’t see what goes on in your head I feel like I’m dead What are you doing

about

This collection of songs was recorded on May 11, 1989 at WZRD, the college radio station of Northeastern Illinois University. It is a live on air performance.

What it lacks in studio polish, overdubs, consistent sound quality etc. it more than makes up for with immediacy and enthusiasm. This is the only recorded document of many of these songs.

In interviews, The Watchmen described their music, not entirely accurately, as "cheerful songs with grim lyrics." In truth Santori's lyrics ranged from grim to surreal to poignant. Although the Watchmen were known for their almost manic delivery of loud and speedy tunes, they interspersed their sets with slower, softer, more spacious songs often with bizarre or ambiguous lyrics. This combination, and their use of cleaner guitar tones than their punk peers made them unique in the Chicago scene.
